The Mystery of the Cross

1. THE CROSS

1. The Bible tells us that Jesus was hung on the Cross, that the Blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles and that we might receive His Holy Spirit.

Galatians 3:13-14 says, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

2. The crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the most important, or most powerful things about Christianity. In fact, they are the most important events in the entire history of mankind.

Col 2:13-15   13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

3. The best God did for humanity was to give the Best He had to die for the worst of men.

Rom 5:7-8    7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But lGod demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

4. The sacrifice of Christ on the Cross was God’s rescue operation from all claims of the enemy on man.

1 Peter 1:18–19     knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

5. The sacrifice of Christ on the Cross was the facilitator of the reunion of God and man.

2 Corinthians 5:17–18. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,

6. The Cross of Calvary was and is the junction of exchange of man’s worst for God’s best.

2 Corinthians 5:21.   For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Hm.

2. THE GREAT EXCHANGE

1. Jesus took our unrighteousness so that we can take on His righteousness

2 Corinthians 5:21.  For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

2. He took our hurt or pain so we could take His health

Isaiah 53:5–6.  But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

3. He took our wretchedness so we can take His blessedness. His bleeding was our blessing. His nakedness was our ‘clothedness.’

2 Corinthians 8:9.  For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

4. He took our ‘cursefulness’ so we can receive His ‘curselessness.’

Galtians 3:13   Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),

5. He was despised so we can be esteemed. He was devalued so we can have value.

Isaiah 53:3.  He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;

6. He took our grief and sorrow so we can take His joy and pleasure.

Isaiah 53:4. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.

3. THE POWER OF HIS BLOOD

1 Peter 1:18–19knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

1. The Blood is our weapon of exemption from enemy plagues and destruction.

Exodus 12:12–13‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

2. The Blood is our weapon of escape from enemy captivity and imprisonment.

Zechariah 9:11–12“As for you also, Because of the blood of your covenant, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to the stronghold, You prisoners of hope. Even today I declare That I will restore double to you.

3. The Blood is our key to Divine health and Divine life.

John 6:54–57.  Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.

4. The Blood is our weapon of victory in battle over the enemy.

Revelation 12:11.  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.

5. The Blood is our instrument of cleansing and purification.

Hebrews 9:13–14.   For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

6. The Blood is our key of access to God’s presence.

Hebrews 10:19.  Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,

Hebrews 10:22.  let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

4. ACCESSING THE BLESSING

1. Receive His sacrificial death on the Cross for you.

John 1:12. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

2. Deepen your understanding of your benefits in redemption.

Deuteronomy 29:29.  “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

3. Appropriate your inheritance by faith.

Hebrews 6:12.  ….. do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
